- UV filters are individual compounds or mixtures to prevent ultraviolet (UV) light from coming through. UV filters are used in sunscreens to protect skin or in photography to reduce haziness or fogginess created by ultraviolet light.
- This is an Ultra Violet absorbing filter that helps overcome the abundance of blue in outdoor photographs. Not really necessary in digital photography as the camera's white balance system adjusts for the colour temperature of the scene.

My new S5 and accessories
I've been wanting a camera with a longer lens so I can zoom in on distant objects. The 3X zoom of my A70 wasn't doing it for me anymore. After playing with an S5 at a brick-and-mortar big box retailer, I ordered everything online. The Canon PowerShot S5 IS, Case Logic TBC-4 case, and 4GB SanDisk SDHC card came from Amazon. The Hoya HMC UV filter, Hoya polarizer, 52mm adapter, lens cap, and lens hood came from Lensmate.
UV (Fliter) Damage
The lens cap somehow came off while the camera was in my bag, and there must have been some impact against the lens filter.
I'm surprised how yellow the broken glass looked, not just in the photo, but also in real life.
It's summer and I need to block those UV rays :S

This often shows up as a haze or a bluish cast, especially when shot from high altitudes and from long distances, particularly over water. UV filters also help protect your lens from dust, moisture, fingerprints, scratches and damage from cleaning. Since they absorb no normal light and have no effect on color or contrast, they can be kept on your lens at all times.
