Homecoming Sunday - Dreams & Visions
This year’s Homecoming theme was Dreams and Visions. These pieces have two sources of inspiration: Gothic rose windows and Native American dreamcatchers.
A Rose window is often used as a generic term applied to a circular window, but is especially used for those which are divided into segments by stone mullions and tracery and found in churches of the Gothic architectural style. These range from the simple to the ornate. The origin of the rose window may be found in the Roman oculus. These large circular openings let in both light and air, the best known being the one at the top of the dome of the Pantheon in Rome, a pagan temple converted into a Christian church many centuries ago.
In Ojibwa culture, a dreamcatcher is a handmade object based on a willow hoop, on which is woven a loose net or web. The dreamcatcher is then decorated with personal and sacred items such as feathers and beads. The Ojibwa believe that a dreamcatcher changes a person's dreams. According to one source, only good dreams would be allowed to filter through . . . Bad dreams would stay in the net, disappearing with the light of day. Good dreams would pass through and slide down the feathers to the sleeper.
